Early arrival of the monsoon has significantly disrupted business fishing activities, prompting trawler operators to wind up operations at the Malim Jetty.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Goa till May 29, followed by a yellow alert from May 30 to June 1.

The State government has officially announced the annual fishing ban from June 1 to July 31 covering the entire coast of the State. The two-month ban is implemented each year to facilitate breeding and replenishment of marine life. The restriction applies to all mechanised and motorised fishing vessels operating in Goan waters.

When contacted, Director of Mandovi fishermen Marketing Co Op Society Ltd Harshad Dhond said all trawler owners were forced to shut down their fishing activities at Malim Jetty from May 20, due to bad weather conditions and cyclonic winds prevailing then.

“No trawler in Malim Jetty has gone to the deep seas since May 20 for fishing as per directions of the State government. Most workers on these trawlers have already left for their native places after anchoring their trawlers at Malim Jetty and will arrive only at the end of July,” said Dhond.

“The early arrival of the monsoon has affected business activities of trawler owners very badly. As it is, the fishing season was not too good this year.”
