A man operating a cell phone business near Shiroda bazaar was forced to vacate his rented shop on Sunday afternoon after he was allegedly found clicking photos of traffic violations on his CCTV and sending it to the traffic department.
This had angered many people as they had received challans.
Sources informed that the man used to click photos from the CCTV installed outside his shop and then send it to the traffic cops. Due to this many had received challans from the traffic department under the traffic sentinel scheme.
After people learnt the pictures were clicked by the man, they gathered outside his shop on Saturday evening and confronted him.
On Sunday morning again the locals gathered in large numbers and demanded with the owner of the shop, who resides in the same
building, to terminate the contract of the man and to ask him to vacate.
One police constable, who was at the spot without uniform, was allegedly beaten by the mob for clicking their photo. He, however, managed to save himself and fled from the spot.
Later, one electronic media and another print media journalist were also manhandled while they tried to click pictures.
Sensing tension, Ponda police inspector Harish Madkaikar summoned staff from Margao and Fatorda police station. Ponda Mamlatdar Abhir Hede was also present.
According to locals more than five hundred people have received the challans for not wearing helmets and other reasons. People alleged that this non-Goan had support from one police sub-inspector and hence challans were issued in such large numbers.
At around 2 pm the wife of the man vacated the shop and took all the equipment in a rickshaw. Police jeeps escorted the rickshaw till her residence.
