PANAJI: The Transport Department has become the first department in the state to accept payments of taxes and fees through credit and debit cards, thanks to the inauguration of the re-designed website of the Department on Monday, the people of the state will not have to make frequent trips to the regional transport offices (RTOs) as much of the documentation related to 65 services can be done online now. The website can be accessed at www.goatransport.gov, which provides services like new vehicle registration, issuance of driving licenses, payment of taxes, etc. PANAJI: Transport Director Nikhil Desai said that the state government is soon going to float a tender for high security registration plate (HSRP). He further said that the file has already been sent for financial approval.
All offices of the Transport Department will start accepting payments like taxes and fees through point-of-sales (POS) machines. This means that people can simply go to these offices and make the payments through credit or debit cards and they will no longer have to carry cash with them.
With the recent development, it is expected that other departments will follow suit, which will help Goa in becoming cash-less society. The event at the Transport Department was inaugurated by Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma and Transport Director Nikhil Desai.
The redesigned website of the Transport Department has been developed by National Informatics Centre (NIC) “ Goa. The department has already integrated Central NIC software like Vahan 4.0, Sarathi 4.0 and E-trans, which will help it in providing services to people through online mode.
Actually, the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways has facilitated the computerisation of more than 1,000 RTOs across the country. The need for computerisation was felt so that there is standardisation in the process of issuing registration certificate (RC) and driving license (DL).
This is because RC and DL are valid throughout the country. If different states follow different processes to grand RC and DL, then it will be difficult to have standardisation. It is in this context that RTOs are getting computerised.

Tender for HSRP
soon: Nikhil Desai
PANAJI: This comes after Goa was one of the states, which got a notice from the Supreme Court (SC) for non-implementation of high security number plates. Now, it appears that the process of implementation of such plates has been fast-tracked. After the file gets financial approval, the government will float a tender for high security number plates. Such high security number plates are expected to help in tracking vehicles and are going to help the administration in keeping a better vigil on crime related activities in the state.
The saga of high security number plates is rather old in Goa. Several times the state government has initiated steps towards the implementation of such plates, but without any success.
In fact, the transport department has floated tender for providing high security number plates a number of times. But, for one reason or the other, the government has not been able to introduce high security number plates.
