A huge banyan tree came crashing down at Vanelim-Colva on Tuesday evening blocking the Colva-Benaulim road, even as incessant rain disrupted normal life in many parts of Salcete.
The entire Vanelim area went without power supply after the uprooted banyan tree landed on the overhead wires and damaged a power transformer on the roadside.
While fire services were trying to clear the tree and restore vehicular traffic on the Colva-Benaulim road, power officials said they may be in a position to restore power supply only on Wednesday as the tree had damaged two poles and the overhead wires.
A power official said the transformer centre has also been damaged and they are waiting for the fire brigade to clear the tree from the road to repair the damaged lines and equipment.
A fire brigade official pointed out that the since the work of clearing the tree is a major operation, they did not rule out the possibility of roping in an expert cutter to clear the tree and open the road for traffic.
The fire brigade also rushed to Varca on Tuesday after an uprooted banyan tree blocked an internal road in the village,. The fire brigade also rushed to Comba and other parts of the city to clear branches that landed on the road following incessant rains.
