Trees that are at the risk of falling in the Chorla area between Goa and Belgaum have not been cut yet and are likely to cause a lot of problems during the monsoons.
Last year, there were several traffic jams due to trees falling on the road due to strong winds.This year, however, the possibility of a large number of trees falling and blocking the highway cannot be ruled out. This is likely to create a constant traffic problem.
It is known that the highway through Chorla area between Goa and Belgaum passes through hilly areas. Due to this trees that pose a hazard on this highway are cut down every year before the rains. This time, however, the process has not begun.
The Chorla highway connecting Goa to Belgaum is very important for transportation. Currently, traffic in the Chorla area is under strain due to some restrictions due to Covid pandemic. Even though the traffic is light at this time of the year, it is likely that traffic on this highway will increase after the curfew is lifted. During the monsoon season, frequent landslides and trees falling on the road, create disruption and slowing down of traffic.
The fire brigade has been very responsive in the past to such disruptions on the highway during the rainy season. During the rainy season last year, trees fell on the highway several times, causing traffic jams. At that time, the road was cleared for traffic by the personnel of this department who rush and clear the fallen trees.
Meanwhile, when fire officials of valpoi were contacted, they said that no instructions have been received from the concerned authorities to remove the trees posing a hazard on the highway. This is likely to put more strain on the firefighting system during the rainy season.
