A container truck carrying hundreds of crates of Coca-Cola overturned at Verna junction on Thursday morning, leading to massive traffic disruption during peak hours.
Though no injuries were reported in the mishap, the driver and co-driver fled the scene soon after the accident, leaving behind the damaged vehicle and scattered cargo.
The truck, which had reportedly loaded the beverage consignments from the Verna industrial area, was on its way to Bangalore when it lost control and overturned at the busy junction.
The impact caused crates filled with soft drink bottles to spill across the road, creating chaos and forcing motorists to abruptly halt and manoeuvre their vehicles to avoid damage.
Office-goers and daily commuters were left stranded as a long queue of vehicles built up on both sides of the road. The situation worsened as curious onlookers gathered at the spot, further slowing down traffic movement.
In the meantime, several passers-by were seen taking advantage of the situation by carrying away crates on two-wheelers and in cars before authorities could completely cordon off the area.
Personnel from Verna Police Station rushed to the site soon after receiving information and initiated traffic regulation and clearance operations. With the help of locals and workers, the scattered crates were shifted off the carriageway and the overturned container was secured to prevent further obstruction. Traffic movement gradually returned to normal after a considerable delay.
Verna Police are carrying out further inquiry into the exact cause of the accident.
