An interstate truck loaded with garbage was detained by police after it was found spilling trash along the highway in Canacona while travelling towards Karnataka early Wednesday morning.
The tarpaulin covering the garbage had been ripped open and waste was strwewn at three places along the highway in Loliem-Polem village.
A social worker said locals began complaining of odour at three different places and alerted authorities. The truck was later detained by Canacona police near the Polem border.
The truck driver claimed that despite his pleas, the truck was overloaded with 16 tonnes of garbage, which was then covered in a haphazard manner. It is believed that the garbage contractor tried to overload the truck with plastics, dry and wet garbage to make the trip viable.
