Truck drivers call for immediate steps to abate leachate nuisance at Sonsodo

MARGAO
A day after a garbage truck skidded inside the Sonsodo waste treatment plant due to the leachate flow, Margao Municipal garbage truck drivers have feared for their lives and have called for immediate measures to abate the nuisance caused by leachate and also repair the damaged approach road.

After reports did the rounds that the garbage truck drivers may not drive the garbage laden vehicles to Sonsodo, Margao Municipal Sanitation Committee Chairman Camilo Barretto rushed to Sonsodo on Friday to take stock of the situation and to chalk out measures.

As the damaged road filled with leachate welcomed the Sanitary Committee Chairman at Sonsodo, Camilo underlined the need to create conducive environment at Sonsodo and to mitigate the risks posed by the unmotorable road to the truck drivers. “The leachate has all flowed onto the approach road to the Sonsodo plant. The road has turned slippery posing danger to the drivers and the vehicles,” he conceded.

Saying the safety and well-being of the municipal workers, including the truck drivers is of paramount importance, Camilo called for urgent measures to repair the Sonsodo approach road on a war footing.

“The approach road is not being repaired till date. I was told at the first meeting of the sanitation committee held last month that the road would be tendered. Pending the completion of the process, I request the Municipal engineer and others to immediately take up the work of soling the road with rubble stone to ensure the safety of the truck drivers,” Camilo said.

He added: “We will be able to give big relief if we dump around 7-8 truckloads of rubble stones. If the civic body cannot make this temporary arrangement immediately by sanctioning the amount, I will foot the bill of the stones.”

Saying that the tax payers only want the local civic body to take care of the garbage generated in the city, Camilo said, “Along with the garbage management, we have to look after the safety of our workers. The road has to be done on priority.”
