CANACONA
Trucks proceeding from Karnataka are being blamed for traffic indiscipline, leading to mishaps along the narrow stretch NH66 road in Canacona.
In the latest incident, a loaded truck travelling from Hospet-Karnataka was reportedly attempting to overtake another loaded heavy vehicle at a slight right turn towards Margao, when its right wheels went off the road and the truck got stuck on one side of the road at Karmalghat.
The truck has been lying at the site for almost a week and vehicles proceeding down a sharp turn at the Karmalghat slope from Margao have struggled to negotiate oncoming vehicles driving up the Karmalghat.
“Trucks regularly ply on this route and despite having full knowledge of the narrow stretch of the highway, especially at Karmalghat, these vehicles still try to overtake and also drive recklessly, risking the lives of other motorists,” complained a motorist driving to Margao.
Another two-wheeler rider coming down the slope, who barely missed colliding with an oncoming vehicle while crossing the stranded truck, added: “After the mishap, there was an immediate need for police personnel to regulate traffic but that has not happened, nor are there any warning signs placed at the site. It is risky to drive at Karmalghat.”
