PANAJI:
Two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of Azim Khan, a native of Uttar Pradesh who worked at a café serving shawarma and shakes near the dargah in Old Goa.
The accused, identified as Dipraj Govekar and Sahil Diwarkar, were traced in a joint operation by Sawantwadi police and Old Goa police following a visit by the Maharashtra police to Old Goa police station seeking assistance.
According to the police, the incident occurred on October 6 between noon and 1 pm at Old Goa. The accused allegedly assaulted Khan with a wooden stick, slaps and kicks following differences related to work at the shawarma café.
After the assault, the accused allegedly took the seriously injured Khan in an Alto car and travelled towards Panaji bus stand before proceeding towards Sawantwadi in Maharashtra.
Khan reportedly died during the journey, following which his body was allegedly dumped in a forested area near Malgaon railway station in Sawantwadi.
Old Goa police received information from Sawantwadi police on the evening of October 6 about the death of an unidentified man. They subsequently helped identify the deceased as Khan.
An offence was registered at Sawantwadi police station on October 7 under Sections 103(1) and 238(a), read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused were arrested by Sawantwadi police after inquiry.
