Two groups clash in Margao, b’day bash ends in murder

Peace was shattered at the migrant-inhabited Azad Nagar locality of the commercial capital around midnight after a brawl between two groups at a birthday celebration resulting in the murder of the 22-year-old birthday boy Muktar Badni.

Tension rent the air at Azad Nagar locality throughout Thursday following the murder with a mob setting ablaze three two-wheelers after the incident. The murder triggered outrage amongst the inhabitants of Azad Nagar, as they demanded eviction of the main accused persons from the locality. They further demanded that all the five accused persons, nabbed by the police, be handed out severe punishment, including death penalty.

Sub-divisional Police Officer, DySP Shivendu Bhushan told the media in the presence of Margao police station in-charge, PI Filomena Costa that the Margao police in a swift action has arrested all the five accused persons allegedly involved in the murder case of Muktar Badni, a resident of Azad Nagar.

Sharing details of the murder, DySP Shivendu informed that the deceased along with his friends were celebrating his birthday late Wednesday at Azad Nagar. He said the accused persons, Vinod Jalgar and others came to the spot and the resultant brawl between the two groups ended in the murder.

Saying the two groups had previous enmity, he said the accused hit the deceased with a metal object, causing serious injuries. He was brought dead at the South Goa district hospital.

After receiving information, Bhushan alongwith PI Costa visited District Hospital. Upon enquiry it was revealed that five accused persons formed an unlawful assembly and assaulted the deceased with wooden danda and some ring like metal weapon resulting in the death of the deceased.

Upon a complaint lodged by Khaja Mohiddin Patel, a resident of Azad Nagar, Margao, the police registered a case under Section 143, 147, 148, 324, 302 R/w 149 of IPC and later arrested accused Vinod Jalgar, Suresh Jalgar, Asif Nagarchi, Akshay Bhove and Hussain, all residents of Azad Nagar.

District police Chief, SP Abhishek Badani said considering the gravity of the offence, multiple teams were formed across South Goa District consisting of PI Filomeno Costa of Margao Town PS, PI Tulshidas Naik of Colva PS and PI Mohan Gaude of Maina Curtorim PS alongwith PSIS and other staff to assist in the investigations.

SP Dhania said accused Vinod Jalgar, was working as Manager at footwear showroom, while Suresh Jalgar, (29) and Asif Nagarchi (29) are both into tarpaulin Sheet business. Accused Akshay Bhove, (24) is a dance teacher. The fifth accused Mohammad Hussain, (31) was working at a Garment Shop.
