Agassaim police on Saturday arrested two UP natives on charges of stealing a brass bell from the Azossim Church.
According to the police, Cipriano Afonso complained that the bell kept in the verandah of the church was stolen by unknown persons.
Accordingly, the police team led by PI Tulshidas Naik started investigations and zeroed in on two accused persons, Ajmer Alam (18), and Chunna Muhumad (36), both residing at Bhoma-Ponda but natives of UP and Bihar respectively.
Both accused were caught at Kundaim and placed under arrest. The bell worth Rs 4.5 lakh was also recovered from them. The rickshaw involved in the commission of the crime was also attached.
Other police personnel involved in detecting the crime included ASI Roque Pereira, constables Chatur Sawant, Rama Parab, Upendra Vaingankar and Dhiraj Sakhalkar.
PI Naik is conducting further investigations into the matter under the supervision of SDPO Vishwesh Karpe and North SP Shobhit Saxena.
