Two months on, construction debris at Porvorim old market yet to be cleared

PORVORIM
Debris of the old market demolished by the Goa Housing Board (GHB) on August 23 still lies near the Goa Cricket Academy ground in Porvorim.

To make matters worse, migrant workers are seen sitting, urinating and spitting at the debris site. People are also seen dumping garbage at this place, particularly at night.

“The GHB office has been shifted to the new market complex near Maruti temple. GHB officials see this debris daily but have not take any action to clear it. The GHB Chairman and Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar should look into the matter and get the debris cleared immediately,” said Pereira.

When contacted, Penha de Franca Sarpanch Sapnil Chodankar said it is responsibility of the GHB to clear the debris.

“They should have cleared the debris immediately after demolishing the old market. It is over two months that the debris is lying at the site. We have already written to the GHB to clear the debris and clean the area,” said Chodankar.

“Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte is very particular about cleanliness and always takes the panch members to task if cleanliness if not maintained. Panchayat will once again remind GHB to lift the debris immediately.”
