The Canacona Zonal Agriculture Office (ZAO) has taken up cultivation of two new varieties of paddy crops, Goa Dhan-3 and Goa Dhan-4, on trial basis in Canacona taluka.
According to Canacona ZAO Kirtiraj Naikgaunkar, both paddy varieties of Goa Dhan-3 and Goa Dhan-4, which are salt-tolerant and particularly suitable in Khazan lands, have been taken up for cultivation in normal paddy fields at two places in the taluka.
“The nursery has already been raised in Polem and Canacona municipality and once ready, will be replanted in approximately 2 hectares of paddy fields in these areas,” Naikgaunkar said.
“Some farmers have also shown keen interest in trying these new varieties. The Director of Agriculture Nevil Alphonso also visited the taluka to inspect the progress of these two different paddy varieties cultivated for the first time in Canacona.
