The Nehru Nagar Residents Association and Jyesth Nagrik Manch have strongly opposed the auctioning of three plots by Goa Housing Board (GHB) along the side of the Service Road opposite Paraiso de Goa complex in Porvorim.
Addressing media persons near the Service Road, social activist Anurag Gupta on behalf of Nehru Nagar Residents Association warned that if the three plots are auctioned by GHB, then residents would be forced to launch a agitation and if required, even resort to a hunger strike.
“Former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar, while laying the foundation stone for the new market complex at Porvorim in 2014, had assured residents that open spaces between Paraiso de Goa and the Service Road would be utilised for recreational activities and that, there would be no more development/commercialisation of Porvorim,” said Gupta.
“Late Parrikar wanted to bring in the concept of Town Square in this area, which would be like an open space where people from different age groups could come and relax. It would also have some entertainment space for people and children. The idea was along the lines of the Trafalgar Square in UK.”
Gupta said residents of Porvorim feel betrayed due to sale of the three plots by GHB for mega commercial projects, which would create traffic congestion on the Service Road.
“The Service Road and footpaths are presently being used by senior citizens, youth and children for walks, cycling, jogging etc. If the three plots are sold for mega commercial projects, the Service Road will be used to park vehicles and thus, the very purpose of the Service Road will be defeated,” he added.
