Fish waste raised a stink in the SGPDA retail market on Tuesday throwing up questions over the upkeep and maintenance of the mega market.
Visitors found fish boxes stacked with waste left behind at the market near the fish cutting shed, not only creating an eyesore, but a nuisance to the visitors.
A visitor wondered why the fish waste is not collected in closed containers if at all the same is disposed of by agencies. “This is a real mess in the market. This cannot be allowed to take place in a mega market visited by thousands of people every day,” the visitor said.
He pointed out that Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira, who had in the past descended in the SGPDA retail market complex to inspect the bio-methanation plant after complaints of contamination of the water bodies, should see for himself the unhygienic state of affairs in the market.
Incidentally, the Goa State Pollution Control Board had recently issued notices to the meat stall vendors with closure notices if they do not stop discharging waste water into the drains and fail to obtain the consent to operate. “The meat stall owners have all obtained the consent to operate as per the GSPCB directions. Will the GSPCB or the Environment Minister issue similar directions to the SGPDA to ensure the upkeep and maintenance of the retail market complex or face closure,” the visitor wondered.
