Undergrad admissions begin today under NEP structure

Provide choice of three or four-year degree prog with 4 degree options

PANAJI

The online admission process to the first year of non-professional under-graduate programmes in colleges in Goa kicks off on Monday (May 29) through the online portal of the Directorate of Higher Education.

Incidentally, this year the new structure and choices under the National Education Policy (NEP) is being introduced and the novel system could complicate the admission process for the XII-pass students and parents.

The new NEP provides a choice to the student to pursue either a three or four-year degree programme with four degree options -- undergraduate (single major), undergraduate (double major), undergraduate (inter-disciplinary) and undergraduate (multi-disciplinary).

The new policy also offers the student options to major in either one or two subjects and to choose a three or four year course, the latter entitling the candidate to a 'honours degree'. For instance a student who wants to obtain a BSc degree in Chemistry and Botany, will have to opt for the four year undergraduate (double major) programme choosing the two subjects.

So when students seek admission to the first year via the admission portal this year, they will have to choose three subjects and compulsorily the ones they want to major in -- one major, one minor and one multi-disciplinary subject.

Students will have to browse website of the colleges and check the choice of subjects available before making their choices.

To aid students with the complexities of making choices thrown up by the introduction of NEP this year, each college will have counsellors who can assist the students. DHE sources said, the name and contact numbers of the admission counsellors of the colleges will be available on the websites of the respective colleges as well as on the DHE's website.
