MAPUSA
In a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into a drug smuggling racket at Colvale Central Jail, police on Friday arrested an undertrial inmate in connection with the case.
The accused has been identified as Manthan Chari, who is currently lodged in the jail in connection with a 2024 murder case in Mapusa.
Police said that the consignment of Ganja (cannabis), which was flung into the jail premises last week, was intended for Chari.
A Mapusa court has remanded the accused to four days of police custody for further investigation.
Earlier on Wednesday, Colvale Police had arrested three persons and detained a minor for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into the high-security prison. The accused reportedly used a rope and a nearby tree to fling small packets or balls of cannabis over the jail’s perimeter wall in a filmy-style operation.
Sources revealed that the racket could have wider links, and more arrests may follow as the investigation progresses.
