The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs at Dabolim airport continued its clampdown on smuggling of gold after confiscating 24 gold bars in two separate cases on Sunday and Monday.
The Customs has been involved in six such gold seizures at Dabolim this month alone.
The AIU seized 12 gold bars worth Rs 38 lakh from a passenger hailing from Navi Mumbai in the wee hours of Monday.
According to the AIU, the passenger, Santosh Malgaokar, arrived at Dabolim airport at about 4.30 am by an Air-India flight from Dubai. “We detained Malgaokar on suspicion and during the search 12 gold bars of 10 tolas each were found in his baggage,” informed the Customs official.
The official further informed that during interrogation, Malgaokar disclosed that the gold was handed over to him by a person from Dubai. The Customs is investigating the case and are trying to trace the mastermind.
Earlier on Sunday, the Customs officials at Dabolim airport seized 1.400 kg of gold from a Bangalore-bound passenger, who was travelling from Dubai to Bangalore via Goa on an Air-India flight.
Since the passenger was bound for Bangalore, the customs completed the necessary formalities and handed him over to the Bangalore Customs for further investigation.
