Normal life was thrown out of gear as torrential showers accompanied by gusty winds led to uprooting of trees which in turn knocked down electricity poles in several parts of Bardez.
In several places, there was no power supply for as long as 18 hours, thus adding to people’s woes.
Mapusa and Pilerne fire brigade officials were busy attending to tree falling calls.
Incidents of tree falling were also reported in Mapusa, Aldona, Siolim, Bastora, Guirim, Revora, Porvorim, Socorro, Baga, Calangute, Candolim and other parts of Bardez.
“There was no loss of life, but some houses were partially damaged due to tree uprooting in many parts of Bardez,” said Bosco Ferrao, Fire Station In-charge, Mapusa.
Uprooting of trees led to snapping of electrical lines, plunging several places into darkness. Many electricity poles were also knocked down, with as many as seven fallen poles being reported in Aldona and four in Pilerne and Verem.
“The electricity department has suffered a loss of about Rs 13 lakh in the last two days,” informed C H Rajgopalan, executive engineer, Mapusa.
He further disclosed that the department was trying its best to restore electricity supply at the earliest. But since several poles have come down, it will take at least a week before power is fully restored, he added.
