The area opposite the Margao railway station witnessed an uproar on Thursday evening after the Margao Municipal workers descended on the footpath near the Azad Nagar locality to lift away illegal fast food gaddas.
Sensing the mood of the local residents and the tension in the air, the MMC team headed by Market inspector Santu beat a hasty retreat, but not before lifting away a fast food gadda.
Market inspector Santu informed that the team had descended on the footpath opposite the Konkan railway station to lift away around nine fast food gaddas erected by some persons. While the team lifted away a gadda, they were confronted by a group of persons, who questioned them for the action.
Santu said since the team had no police protection at the time of the incident, the MMC workers withdrew from the site.
The team later removed a fast food gadda at the Gogol junction and another near the Power house junction on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the residents of Azad Nagar questioned the action by the Margao Municipal Council, saying the gaddas have been existing at the site since 1992 when they were all shifted from the adjoining bandh to set up the Konkan railway station and rehabilitated at the locality.
They demanded to know the criteria adopted by the Margao Municipality in clearing them away from the place, insisting they are all Indians and have every right to eke a living on the gaddas.
