Uproar at Virabhat as cellular company tries to construct mobile tower with police protection

MARGAO

Virabhat area of Curtorim witnessed an uproar on Wednesday noon after the cellular company tried to bulldoze its way with the construction of a mobile tower with police protection.

As soon as the work on the tower commenced days after it was stopped by the agitating residents, people gathered at the spot requesting the company to stop the work. While the workers paid heed to the demands to stop the work, the villagers demanded that the company lift away the water pumps from the site.

A resident Savio informed that the people assembled around noon after the company resumed work on the mobile tower with police protection. He reiterated that the residents are not opposed to the mobile tower per se, but have been only demanding shifting of the site to a place where there is no human habitation.

“The mobile tower is sought to be installed on the premise of the government primary school. The school premises is surrounded by residential houses. Hence, the residents have been demanding shifting of the tower to the alternate location,” Savio added.

Curtorim Congress leader Moreno Rebello, who rushed to the spot as news spread over the resumption of work with police protection, told the media that the tower cannot come up at the GPS premises, the only place of recreation for the school students. He said the residents have already petitioned the panchayat to scrap the tower, but lamented that no action has been forthcoming from the local body to date.

Moreno said the residents will have no option but to take a morcha to the panchayat if it does not issue a stop work order to the cellular company.
