PANAJI
The Archdiocese of Goa and Daman celebrated the Mass Media Apostolate day on Sunday with a special celebration, including the Eucharist and a short programme, at Lar De Estudantes, Altinho-Panaji.
The main celebrant at the Mass, Vicar General Fr Jose Remedios Fernandes, gave some practical points on how to use mass media, and especially social media, in a positive way.
He cautioned the participants saying the media is often used to promote personal agendas or create public opinions that are advantageous to those in power or for the benefit of business houses.
Fr Fernandes invited them to critically analyse any message before believing it and verify the facts for any wrong information or fake news. He invited everyone to not just pay attention to sensational news but to information and news that promotes the welfare of society.
Advising all to be sensitive to others while sharing any information, he also invited the priests and laity to make use of all services of the Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media (DCSCM) to impart media education in their parishes.
He highlighted the need to educate oneself in the proper and safe use of media and invited everyone to use media for the betterment of society.
While thanking the vicar general, DCSCM Director Fr Barry Cardozo conveyed the wishes of Cardinal Felipe Neri Ferrao, as he could not make it for the celebration due to another important engagement.
Fr Cardozo also appreciated the work of all his close collaborators and called upon all the faithful, priests and religious to work together for the betterment of society through the media and create a communion of communities.
After the Mass, there was a short programme in the hall and sharing of views and experiences. Fr Rony Fernandes (Secretary cum Treasurer of DCSCM), Fr Alfi D'Cruz, Fr Leo Fernandes (Executive secretary of Pastoral Secretariat), the DCSCM Core Committee and animators were also present for the occasion.
