Members seek action over JCB use in protected zone; demand crackdown on migrant hawkers

A host of issues took centre stage at the gram sabha of the Varca panchayat on Sunday, including the two recent incidents of JCB machine deployed by a hotel project and by a private person in a CRZ area.
The meeting chaired by Sarpanch Flavia Barretto also saw members demanding action against the migrant hawkers illegally operating on the beach belt. They also demanded that the panchayat write to the authorities to inquire into sale of drugs by the illegal hawkers.
After the meeting, the sarpanch told the media that the panchayat had issued a stop work order to hotel promoters after villagers had pointed out that the company had deployed a JCB in a CRZ zone without permission. The sarpanch however, said the hotel company has replied back saying that they have only cleared the bushes and no damages have been done to the sand dune.
As far as the recent Fatrade incident is concerned, the sarpanch explained that the Varca panchayat did not allow anyone to use machine to clear bushes or vegetation.
She said the panchayat had taken a resolution to clear the bushes on the beach access, adding that the resolution has been sent to the PWD to carry out the work.
