Affected residents on Tuesday continued their protest against the felling of trees for construction of the Mopa Airport Link road and Varkhand Sarpanch Sanjay Tulaskar assured support and legal aid to them.
The aggrieved residents complained that several plantations had been destroyed by officials using heavy machinery despite a case pending before a court.
The farmers went to the panchayat office at about 3.30 pm but when the sarpanch and panchas were not present in the office, they refused to leave the premises and waited till 6.30 pm for the panch members.
A Pernem police team led by PI Vikram Naik was also present at the site.
Later, Sarpanch Sanjay Tulaskar and other panchas went to the panchayat office and convened a meeting with a delegation of villagers.
Later speaking to media persons, a local Sandip Kambli said the panchayat has agreed to send a notice to the contractor to stop ongoing work.
Sarpanch Sanjay Tulaskar told reporters that the panchayat would extend support to the villagers and would provide them with legal assistance.
To another query, Tulaskar said the panchayat had not received any documents pertaining to the Mopa Airport Link road.
