Vasco Advocates Association (VAA) on Monday evening condemned the brutal attack on Mapusa-based lawyer Gajanan Sawant and demanded that policemen involved in the attack be immediately arrested.

Addressing the media, VAA Secretary Adv Chetan Palekar said an urgent managing committee meeting was convened on Monday at Bar Room Vasco Court to condemn the brutal attack by the police personnel on Adv. Gajanan Sawant, who is the member of Mapusa Bar Association, while performing his professional duty.

"The VAA strongly condemns the brutal attack on Adv Sawant and fully support the fight against injustice done to Adv Gajanan Sawant. The VAA demands that immediate action be initiated against all four policemen involved in the attack and they be suspended till the investigation is completed in all the respects, otherwise, there are chances that the police personnel will may influence the investigation,” said Adv Palekar.

Despite the FIR being lodged against the police personnel on December 9, no arrest has been made till date which shows the connivance between the police personnel and the investigation agency (Crime Branch) trying to protect the accused. Therefore, the entire investigation has to be done under the supervision of retired high court judge as the accused involved in the crime are police personnel," said Adv. Palekar.

VAA Past president Adv. Dileshwar Naik said the police personnel involved in the attack are to be arrested immediately as there are chances that they may destroy the evidence.

"A false FIR lodged against Adv. Gajanan Sawant to pressurize him must be quashed immediately. If need arises, we will approach the chief minister, who is the home minister, to intervene in the matter for appropriate direction if the investigation agency does not carry out proper investigation. We shall approach the appropriate court in case the investigation is not carried out by the investigation agency in a proper way,” said Adv Naik.
