The Vasco BJP Mandal on Thursday filed an RTI seeking details of how many Goans had been employed in Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) since the last two years.
When a group led by Block President Deepak Naik and former Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Nandadeep Raut went to the GSL premises, they were not allowed inside and made to wait outside the gate for over 20 minutes citing security reasons, which infuriated the BJP members.
After the BJP Mandal members threatened a mass agitation, GSL officials arrived at the gates and Naik and Raut were allowed to enter the GSL to personally submit the RTI application.
An RTI filed by Deepak Naik has sought information on the number of times the GSL has issued job opportunity notices since 2020, the names and address proof of applicants and the names and permanent addresses of those selected by GSL since 2020.
The RTI also sought information on the number of Goans employed in GSL and if Goan applicants were denied jobs in GSL since 2020.
Speaking to reporters, Deepak Naik said local leaders were not even allowed to enter the GSL premises.
"We had only arrived to file an RTI to fight for the rights of Goans. The GSL generates a lot of employment but non-Goans are given the jobs and they misguide us by saying Goans don't apply for jobs,” said Naik.
“I have details of people who have applied but have been rejected by GSL saying that they don't have technical knowledge. We wonder why a peon needs technical knowledge at GSL and why do they take non-Goans even for the smallest jobs.”
“The GSL must give jobs to Goans, and especially Vascokars, on priority and we will engage in mass protest and stop works of GSL if they don’t mend ways," said Naik.
"The GSL must remember that former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar had ensured assignments worth crores of rupees to GSL and requested them to reserve 20 per cent jobs to Goans, but GSL does not take Goans," said Naik.
Former MMC Chairperson Nandadeep Raut said he had been raising the issue since the last 7 years since GSL is based in his ward.
“Earlier, every house in my ward had GSL employees and when these people retired, GSL stopped taking Goans. Presently, there is no one employed in GSL from my ward.”
“GSL has many job opportunities and we have a lot of unemployed people in Vasco. We don't need to pressure the State government for jobs if GSL and other central institutions start hiring Goans," said Raut.
