An abandoned, dilapidated and unsafe building in Vasco was finally demolished on Thursday, bringing relief to nearby residents who had long feared for their safety. The building had remained in a dangerous condition for several years, with residents repeatedly raising concerns about the risk it posed to pedestrians and neighbouring properties, particularly during the monsoon.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said the demolition became possible after he personally intervened and brought together the flat owners and the building owner to resolve the issue. He said several rounds of discussions were held before both parties agreed to demolish the structure in the interest of public safety.
Salkar said the safety of Vascokars must always remain the top priority and stressed that abandoned buildings in a dangerous condition cannot be allowed to stand indefinitely. He pointed out that many owners continue to ignore notices and directions issued by the district administration and the Collector, putting innocent lives at risk.
The MLA called on the government to take strict action against owners of unsafe buildings who fail to comply with official notices. He said issuing notices alone is not enough and warned that negligent owners should be held accountable if any untoward incident occurs because of the collapse of such structures.
Residents welcomed the demolition, saying the building had become a serious safety hazard and a constant source of concern for the neighbourhood. They expressed hope that the authorities would identify and take similar action against other abandoned and structurally unsafe buildings across Vasco before they become disaster sites. Salkar reiterated that public safety cannot be compromised and urged the authorities to speed up action against all dangerous structures in the city to prevent accidents and protect lives.
