The Vasco fish market on Thursday wore a deserted look, as local fish vendors marched to confront Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson Deepak Naik over his failure to direct police to curb roadside sale of fish by Lamani hawkers.
After meeting Naik, the local fish vendors met at the fish market to decide their future course of action if MMC failed to direct the police to initiate action in the next three days.
Local fish vendors' leaders, Dulcina D’Souza and Anita Fernandes, warned that if MMC failed to act, the fish vendors would come on the streets to agitate.
While criticising the Lamani fish hawkers, the fish vendors' leader, Carridade Pereira also voiced her anger at a fish van operating in the port town.
“First, it was the Lamani hawkers, and now private fish vans are operating here. In future, we don't know whether they will be allowed to carry out our traditional trade,” said Pereira.
An elderly fish vendor added: “If we do not get any relief, we will approach other local fish vendors to support us. It's a do or die situation. It is better to die and kill our children than to die of hunger and humiliation at the hands of the politicians.”
