The protest by Vasco fish market vendors of selling fish outside the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building on Wednesday ended in the afternoon after Vasco PI Kapil Nayak persuaded fish vendors that Vasco police would strive to prevent the illegal sale of fish by the roadsides and the wholesale market in Kharewaddo.
Vasco PI Kapil Nayak also informed the Vasco fish market vendors that he would write to the fisheries department to intervene in the situation.
“We had a meeting with the Vasco fish market vendors after they started to sell the fish in retail outside the MMC building which caused traffic congestion and inconvenience to the public,” PI Nayak told reporters.
“Their grievance is that they don't get business in the market due to sale of fish in the wholesale shops and by roadside vendors. I explained to them that Vasco police have always done its best and even acted against roadside vendors and fish wholesalers and even booked them under relevant acts.”
PI Nayak said he had explained to the fish market vendors that the sale by roadside vendors could not be stopped overnight.
“I have assured to deploy staff and do our best to prevent illegal sale of fish on the roadside or at wholesale shops. This is the best we can do as the police because the final authority to stop or seal wholesale shops is not with the police department but we can offer assistance to the MMC as and when required.”
“I am also planning to write to the fisheries department so that they can intervene in this matter," said PI Nayak.
