Anjuna Police have arrested a 36-year-old man from Vasco for allegedly posting objectionable content about Swami Samarth on social media, following a complaint that the posts had hurt the religious sentiments of devotees.
The accused has been identified as Santosh Lamani, a resident of Vasco.
According to police, a complaint had been lodged a few days ago alleging that Lamani had uploaded offensive remarks and content against Swami Samarth on a social media platform.
The complainant alleged that the posts were derogatory in nature and had deeply offended devotees, leading to widespread resentment.
Based on the complaint, Anjuna Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
During the course of the probe, police traced the social media account to Lamani and subsequently took him into custody.
Police said the accused has been booked under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting religious beliefs, along with applicable provisions of the Information Technology Act, wherever attracted.
"Following the complaint, a detailed inquiry was conducted and the accused was identified and arrested. Further investigation is in progress to ascertain all the circumstances surrounding the social media posts," an investigating officer said.
