The Vasco Traffic Cell conducted a special enforcement drive targeting two-wheelers fitted with modified silencers, in an effort to curb rising noise and sound pollution in the city.
During the operation, officers booked 13 cases under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. This section attracts a fine of up to Rs 10,000 for vehicles found operating with altered exhaust systems that produce noise levels beyond permissible limits.
Vasco Traffic Police Inspector Alvito Rodrigues said the action was part of a sustained campaign to restore peace in residential and market areas.
“Modified silencers cause extreme disturbance, especially in congested areas and during late hours. Such alterations are not just illegal but also a major nuisance to the public. We have taken a strict view on this issue and will continue to take similar action,” Rodrigues stated.
He further urged motorists to avoid such modifications and comply with legal standards.
“Our aim is not to penalise unnecessarily, but to ensure that roads are safe and free from unnecessary noise pollution. We appeal to all riders to remove modified silencers and help us maintain a peaceful environment,” he said, while adding that the drive will continue in the coming days.
