Vehicle owners panic as garbage dump catches fire at Margao KTC stand

MARGAO
A raging fire at mini-garbage dump, adjoining the Margao KTC bus stand gave some anxious moments for the private vehicle owners, who use the area to park their vehicles.

As the fire engulfed the mound of waste on late Friday evening, the vehicle owners rushed to the area to remove their vehicles from the spot, fearing that the fire might spread to the entire area.

Margao fire brigade personnel also rushed to the area to extinguish the fire and the fire personnel had to use two tanks to bring the fire under control.

The vehicle owners told the media that this is not the first time that the mini-waste dump was engulfed in a fire. They pointed out that the Margao Municipal Council has been dumping on the land over the last several months despite protests by the vehicle owners.

Suresh Talgaonkar told the media that the owners have been using the land to park their vehicles given that the business is down since the COVID-19 pandemic. “During this time, we have seen the MMC dumping waste in the open area adjoining the KTC bus stand. We have been using the land to park our vehicles since we have no other place for parking,” Suresh said, adding that they fear that their vehicles running into lakhs of rupees may be destroyed if the fire keeps occurring at the dump.

“We had in the past requested the MMC to stop waste dump in the land adjoining the KTC but they claim that the land belongs to the government,” he said, while requesting the authorities to work out a solution.
