The Velim gram sabha on Sunday has adopted a resolution opposing any move to divert the Mhadei river waters and revoke the Detailed Project Report (DPR) nod given to Karnataka by the Centre.
Sarpanch Veena Cardozo told the media after the meeting that the gram sabha resolution has called for the revocation of the DPR issued by the centre and also protect the interests of Goa.
The gram sabha also gave the nod for the setting up of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) near the Panchayat ghar. A month ago, a group of residents had expressed their opposition to the MRF facility staying close to the Panchayat ghar on grounds that such a facility cannot be set up in a residential locality.
The Sarpanch pointed out that the gram sabha has given the nod to set up the MRF facility only to treat dry waste generated in the village. She further said that those opposing the MRF project should intervene in the High Court saying the High Court is monitoring the matter.
The gram sabha also discussed the issue of tenant verification in a bid to recover one month rent from the households leasing out their premises on rent. The Sarpanch said the ward members have been requested to find out the number of tenants staying in their respective wards, before the Panchayat compiles the list and levy the rent.
The issue of illegal constructions and land filling of water bodies in and around Cutbona area was raised by the gram sabha members. The members sought to know the action initiated by the panchayat against the illegal activities.
The intervention of Velim MLA Cruz Silva, who attended the meeting, was sought by the gram sabha members to initiate action against the illegal activities.
