A group of residents of Velsao have written to Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha and the Mormugao Mamalatdar, requesting them to inspect several fields which were damaged by the entry of saline water.
Several farmers of Pale Tolem Xetkarachem Association (PTXA) have reported losses after the cyclone Vayu damaged the protective bund, bringing in saline water from the sea into the fields.
PTXA President and pormer panch Roquezinho D’Souza said the association had requested Mormugao Mamlatdar Suresh Prabhu to carry out an inspection. “We have written to Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha and the mamlatdar about the destruction of the protective Bella Bund due to a natural calamity (Cyclone Vayu).”
“The incident occurred on Monday at around 5 pm, when the Bella Bund collapsed due to strong cyclonic winds. With the collapse of Bund, saline water entered the fields and affected the crops. Many seeds recently sown were washed away and the field is no more in use. This has caused a huge loss to the farmers. We have requested them to carry out an inspection of the area and also look forward to some assistance to farmers who have faced severe losses,” said D’Souza.
