Velsao-Pale-Issorcim Gram Sabha opposes licences for mega projects

The Gram Sabha of VP Velsao-Pale-Issorcim in Mormugao Taluka has unanimously passed a resolution opposing the grant of construction licences for multi-dwelling and mega projects within its jurisdiction.

Highlighting civic concerns, villagers pointed to the growing garbage menace despite the panchayat’s efforts, erratic power and water supply, and the poor condition of internal roads. The resolution, moved by Sandra Rodrigues, called for an immediate halt to construction licences until the State government undertakes a study to determine the carrying capacity of the three villages.

Sarpanch Maria Diana Gouveia thanked the villagers for their support, stating, “We want to safeguard our water bodies, paddy fields, agricultural land and hills. Henceforth, no licences for multi-dwelling or mega projects will be granted. I appeal to all to preserve the identity and unique culture of our villages.”

Gram Sabha member Manuel Rodrigues urged better infrastructure, especially uninterrupted power supply, while appealing to villagers have to join hands to arrest rapid urbanisation which will be disastrous to the villagers in the long run.

Sandra Rodrigues further raised her long-standing demand for access to her residence and neighbourhood, which she said had been blocked by South Western Railways and its contractor RVNL.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Panch Tecla.
