AICC General Secretary (Organisation) and Lok Sabha MP KC Venugopal on Wednesday said the Congress was open to a grand alliance with like-minded parties with the objective of defeating the BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Venugopal was speaking to reporters at Dabolim Airport shortly after arriving in Goa.
Asked about the possibility of a grand alliance of political parties, a proposal that has emerged as a key subject of discussions and strategies ahead of the elections, Venugopal said he would take a call on the matter.
“If all the parties are having sincerity to defeat the BJP, then certainly, we are open for a grand alliance with them,” Venugopal said.
His remarks come amid discussions among various political parties over possible alliances and electoral strategies ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections. Venugopal’s statement leaves the door open for the Congress to engage with other parties if there is a shared objective of taking on the BJP.
Venugopal received a warm welcome from Congress leaders and workers upon his arrival in the State. Senior leaders, including Goa in-charge Manikrao Thakare, Dr Anjali Nimbalkar, South Goa MP Capt Viriato Fernandes and GPCC president Girish Chodankar, were present at the airport.
A large number of Congress workers, party office-bearers and local leaders also gathered at the airport to welcome the AICC general secretary. The visit is expected to be closely watched in the context of the party’s preparations and political strategy ahead of the Assembly elections.
