Goa State President of Bharatiya Janata Party Sadanand Shet Tanavade on Friday said that his party will respect the verdict of the Supreme Court regarding the reservation of seats in five municipal elections scheduled in Goa. In the same breath, Tanavade expressed confidence that SC’s order will not stand to upset the BJP’s victory at the five municipal polls.
“We respect the SC order. But this judgment will have no negative effect on the outcome of the municipal elections in the five municipalities for the BJP. All the candidates we have supported will emerge victorious,” he stated.
He dismissed the suggestion that this is a major setback for the BJP government in the state. “This is not a setback. On March 20, six municipalities and one corporation will go to polls as scheduled and we are all set for a sweep. People’s support is the most important and we are counting on this support. In a democracy, the court is supposed to set the law straight. While we respect this decision, we are confident of a clean victory,” Tanavade asserted.
When asked about his views on the legal aspects of the judgment, Tanavade insisted that the BJP government had stuck to the same process which has been followed till date in this regard. “So, I don’t understand the legalities involved and will not comment on it,” he said.
