Verla-Canca locals threaten agitation if PWD fails to restore water supply

Verla-Canca locals threaten agitation if PWD fails to restore water supply

MAPUSA
Without pipeline water for four consecutive days, angry residents of Verla-Canca on Wednesday met the PWD Assistant Engineer Krupalli Chandran in Mapusa and threatened to stage a morcha in front of his office if normal supply was not restored within the next two days.

The locals also decried the department’s move to shift the junior engineer overseeing the Verla-Canca area from Mapusa to the Calangute office.

The panchayat member of Verla-Canca, Bala Naik informed that the overhead tank in the village has not received a drop of water for the last several days depriving PWD pipeline water to the villagers.

“We have not been receiving proper water supply for the last four days. The distribution system has completely failed, putting the residents in great difficulty. The government should give specific instructions to the officials and restore the supply to the village,” Naik said.

He said the concerned junior engineer and the assistant engineer should ensure that water supply was restored on top priority and people should not be made to suffer any further.

A resident of Verla-Canca, Anil Kumar Nagvekar informed that PWD engineers were pretending that they were not aware of the water scarcity and only shifted the blame on others.

“The assistant engineer informed us that he will have to survey the area to understand the problem as he has been newly appointed to the post. This indicates the lack of concern for the basic needs of the people,” Nagvekar said.

He said people of the village were agitated due to irregular supply of water and warned the officials to either restore the supply or face protest.

“If PWD fails to restore the supply within the next two days, all the residents of Verla-Canca will march to the office in Mapusa,” he warned.

Nagvekar also slammed the government for shifting the JE to Calangute which is almost 7 km away.

“Next time if we have any water-related problems we will have to travel to Calangute which is quite far. The government should bring the JE back to the Mapusa office which is much closer,” he said.
