A late evening altercation at Upasnagar, Sancoale, escalated into a violent assault involving a woman and her family, prompting Verna police to arrest four persons on multiple serious charges, including outraging modesty and criminal intimidation.
According to police, the incident occurred on December 29 at around 6.45 pm, when the complainant, Susmita Das (24), a resident of Birla-Sancoale but a native of Buloniya, Tripura, was returning home with her husband and sister-in-law.
Near Upasnagar, they were allegedly restrained by Toffick Shaikh, of Housing Board, Upasnagar, Sancoale, who is reported to have abused them and pushed the complainant’s husband.
Police said Shaikh then called three associates, who arrived at the spot on two scooters. One of them, Adnan Shaikh, a resident near Titan Junction, Verna, allegedly pushed the complainant’s husband again. When the woman intervened, Adnan Shaikh is accused of touching her chest with intent to outrage her modesty.
The situation worsened when Toffick Shaikh, along with Iqran Jagirdar and Meezan Sayed, both residents of Housing Board, Upasnagar, allegedly pushed the complainant’s sister-in-law to the ground and assaulted her with sandals and fist blows. Police further stated that Toffick Shaikh allegedly took out a knife from his scooter and threatened the victims with dire consequences, before all accused fled from the spot on their scooters.
Based on the complaint, Verna police registered an offence under sections 126(2), 352, 74, 79 and 351(3) read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The four accused have been arrested and further remanded to police custody for three days.
The case is being investigated by PSI Pramila Fernandes under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
