The two-day Reels on Wheels International Festival of Films on Cycling organised by Ravindra Bhavan, Margao and Saxtti Films got underway at the Ravindra Bhavan on Saturday in the presence of Olympian Alexi Singh Grewal, with TCP Minister announcing plans to set up a Cycle Velodrome, besides cycle lanes in Fatorda constituency.
The Olympian will accompany participating cyclists in a 25-km cycle rally on Sunday morning from the Ravindra Bhavan.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the two-day festival, the TCP Minister said a cycling velodrome will become a reality near the Opinion Poll Square by the year-end.
“I understand that cycling has not caught up with the people of Goa in a big way. But, let us make a
small beginning from Fatorda by constructing a cycle velodrome and earmarking dedicated cycle lanes,”
he said.
The TCP Minister said though the new brand of cycles is beyond the reach of the common man, the current financial situation brought about the mining shutdown prevents the government to come out with any incentive to promote cycling.
In his address, Olympic cycling gold medalist Alexi Singh Grewal said he has reviewed the films to be screened at the festival and there are so many things within the scope of it that they are also in his own personal experience.
Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai reminded the audience that cycling keeps one to remain fit and thanked Saxtti Films co-founder and curator, Savia Viegas for holding the festival with Ravindra Bhavan.
Ravindra Bhavan Chairperson Prashant Naik, Savia Viegas and Saiesh Panandikar also spoke at the inaugural function.
