High Court direction to shift the inhabitants of Comba coming in the way of the long delayed ring road project saw the district administration and the TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai trying to hammer out a solution taking into account the interests of the residents and the completion of the project.
TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai, District Collector Anjali Sherawat, Additional Collector Johnson Fernandes, senior PWD officials, MMC councillor Ketan Kurtarkar, BJP leader Sharmad Raiturcar and the residents h
eld discussions at the district Collectorate on Thursday morning to work out a solution.
The High Court had issued directions to come out with makeshift arrangements to house the residents in schools located at Mobor, Chinchinim and Manora. The residents, however, pointed out that they should be temporarily housed close by to their residence and not far away such as Mobor.
The TCP Minister later told the media that it has been decided to explore the possibility of housing the 15 families in newly constructed Housing Board tenements at Rumdamol Housing Board. "If there are occupancy certificates issued for the tenements, the residents will be housed temporarily at the Housing board tenements," Vijai said, adding that he would take up the issue with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on the question of the Housing Board rehabilitating the displaced residents.
"Last time round, we have made informal discussions with the residents
whether the Housing Board can construct houses for them on the acquired land. The proposal was only at the initial state and I will take up the matter with the Chief Minister on the issue," he said, adding that the government is committed in giving justice to the residents.
On their part, the residents made a plea to the Minister as well as the district authorities not to shift them before the ensuing Ganesh Chathurti festival, adding that they will favourably consider moving to a makeshift accommodation after the festivities.
