Valpoi Municipal Council has decided to reduce the rent it charges on its shops by 50 per cent after shop lease holders demanded reduction citing slow business. The decision was taken during a council meet attended by the local MLA Vishwajit Rane and will be implemented after Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) grants the permission.

Over 50 shop lease holders were demanding, for the past few months, the rent of Rs 300 per square meter being charged by the council to be reduced. The lease holders have cited that business generated at Valpoi town cannot sustained the high rents being charged from them. A memorandum in this regards had been submitted to the Valpoi MLA.

Vishwajit Rane has said that as per the government guidelines rate of the the rent in valpoi is Rs  150 per square metre but earlier VMC had decided to impose rupees 300  per square metre in order to collect more revenue in the VMC treasury. However, due to the in-affordable rents, many businesses have closed down and lease holders have surrendered their shops back to the VMC. Due to this many shops of VMC are lying unused and there is no revenue being generated by them.

The VMC councilors taking this into account has decided to reduce the resnt to Rs 150 per square meter. A resolution in this regard has been passed unanimously and it has been sent to the DMA for approval, Rane added.

Speaking on the occasion Chairperson Praveen Shaikh informed that reduction in rent had been demanded for a while now.
