He was speaking at a largely attended Matrushakti Melava organised by BBSM at Porvorim on Sunday.
“BBSM had supported the BJP during the last assembly election as BJP leaders had assured to stop grants to English medium primary schools, if the party were to come to power. But BJP did not honour its commitment and thus betrayed the electorate,” said Velingkar.
“Women play an important role in the formation of the government. They can influence their male family members and have the power to elect the government of their choice. The time has now come for all women to come together and elect the government which will stop grants to English medium primary schools and preserve Goan culture,” he added.
Alleging that the BJP has set aside Rs 600 crore for the ensuing the assembly elections, Velingkar said the money would be used to woo voters by offering them gifts in kind and cash.
“People of good character should come to power if the people want a good government. Casino culture has spoiled Goan youth, but the government is not bothered about the same. The government system has become corrupt. Loans taken by the State government from the open market and other means was Rs 4,500 crore during the Congress rule. Now, this loan has touched a staggering amount of Rs 16,000 crore. The time has now come to throw out the existing BJP government and elect new people of good character who will look after the interest of Goan culture and the language,” Velingkar said.
Swati Kerkar, Dr Vrunda Kelkar, Sampada Sangelkar, Chandani Dessai, Priya Malika, Amrita Kamat and Shephali Narvekar also spoke at the meeting.
