Praising the Catholic Church in its efforts towards nation building and especially for the selfless dedicated services that its members render to society, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday also lauded Christians for being a peace-loving community.
Naidu was addressing a gathering at the Christmas Celebrations 2017 organized by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) at the Archdiocesan Community Centre of Delhi.
"Jesus' message is meant for all seasons, for all cultures, for all religions and for all nationalities," said Naidu, while commending the Catholic community's ceaseless efforts towards nation building.
Applauding the social and welfare activities of the Church, Naidu said the Catholic Church runs hospitals and other healthcare facilities in remote areas of the country and serves millions of poor patients through its healthcare programmes.
"The Catholic communities in India along with the Christian community as a whole have been assiduously engaged in contributing their share to the building of a New India, which is united and strong," he said.
Lauding Catholics as a peace-loving community and working with every government, both at the Centre and in the States, to promote people's welfare, the vice-president said the Catholic Church in India has been effectively contributing to the nation building process in a number of ways.
Naidu said Christmas is a time to renew our commitment to love and serve our families, communities and society, to be just and transparent in our dealings, to promote social and economic inclusion of all, to promote lasting peace between people of different religions and cultures and to promote sustainable development.
CBCI President Cardinal Cleemis spoke of Christmas as the feast of love, peace and harmony. He appealed to the Government of India to accelerate relief assistance to the thousands of fishermen affected by Cyclone Ockhi in Kanyakumari and Trivandrum and urged for long-term rehabilitation schemes for the victims.
CBCI Secretary General Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas spoke of Christmas as the feast that brings all peoples, cultures and faiths together.
The Catholic Church in India runs over 25,000 schools and colleges and looks after 85,000 beds in Catholic-run hospitals across the country, several of them in remote locations.
It also takes pride in more than 5,000 registered NGOs catering to the basic needs of over 5 million poor and marginalized people annually.
