In response to public demands after a youth drowned in the Mhadei river at Bhironda a few days ago, the Bhironda panchayat has initiated safety measures and installed warning signboards along the riverbank.
Sarpanch Udaysing Rane said more comprehensive steps will follow. The river stretch behind the panchayat building attracts many visitors, especially during holidays, and has seen incidents of alcohol consumption and unruly behaviour, increasing risks. The riverbed is deep in parts, and lack of awareness has led to repeated drowning incidents.
Four days ago, a group of youth from Panaji visited the site for bathing, and one of them drowned. Locals said around four such incidents have occurred in the past five years.
The panchayat has requested police deployment, particularly on weekends and holidays, to curb unlawful activities.
“Such incidents tarnish the village’s image, and all precautions will be taken,” said Rane, urging visitors to act responsibly. Locals have welcomed the initiative.
