MARGAO
The Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) has taken strong objection to Margao Municipal Council’s decision to invoke the High Court by giving extensions to the two door-to-door waste collection agencies engaged by the civic body.
SCM convenor Savio Coutinho said it would be most appropriate for the High Court to award the council for its unique feat of spending nearly Rs one crore every month on waste management and not deriving a single kilogram of compost.
Coutinho said the manner in which the council has repeatedly stated that the High Court is monitoring the waste management, it appears as if this council has the directions of the High Court to appoint an agency for door-to-door collection without following Codal formalities, to make Rs 15 lakh of payments every month without a valid contract/MOU and to arbitrarily grant an extension to the agency for three years, from January 2020 till date and refrain from the onward treatment of the wet waste collected, but instead hand over to the Bio Remediation contractor, spending additional amounts running into several crores.
He was reacting to the decision of the council to place the issue of granting further extension to the two door-to-door waste contractors at the ensuing meeting of the council scheduled on December 5.
