Shortage and muddy supply of water continues to haunt Mapusa and a part of Bardez despite recent promises made by the PWD minister and the concerned PWD officials.
Surprisingly, despite Goa witnessing vigorous monsoon and rainfall quota crossing the normal mark, complaints of shortage of water came from different areas of Bardez.
“Despite making several complaints we continue to get poor supply of water in Siolim. The muddy colour of water is also disturbing. The PWD staff appears clueless about the problem,” said Gregory D’Souza of Siolim-Marna.
Its common knowledge that turbidity of water increases during the monsoon season but this year the supply was so bad that people had no option but depend on packaged water for consumption.
Besides Mapusa, Porvorim has been facing the brunt of muddy supply of water for more than a month now.
“The colour of water supply is not as muddy as it was earlier. So that way the problem of muddy supply has reduced. But scarcity of water supply continues. Shortage of water continues in Porvorim,” said local MLA Rohan Khuante.
For more than a month, Mapusa faced a crisis over supply of pipeline water as several areas were not getting PWD water supply.
Due to monsoons, there was not much of open protests from the public but several residents complained to the local MLA and the councilors about the problem.
On Wednesday, PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar promised the Mapusa MLA and the councilors to release 15 MLD of water to Mapusa to overcome the shortage of supply.
But despite the PWD minister’s assurance, on Friday some residents barged into the PWD office and complained of restricted water and muddy water supply.
“We have received water today but the supply is muddy. How can we consume this water?” said Gaurish Keni of Gaunsa-Vaddo, Mapusa.
Assistant Engineer, PWD (water), Subhash Belgaonkar informed that Mapusa has started getting over 15 MLD supply of water.
“People in Mapusa will get enough water supply from now onwards. The muddy water problem has also reduced considerably,” Belgaonkar said.
But the ground reality is far from convincing and consumers continue to have problems over irregular supply.
