Weekend sessions to train Goans wishing to contribute to Wikipedia

PANAJI
The Wikipedians of Goa, a group of Goan enthusiasts who have been adding to Goa-related pages on Wikipedia for the past fifteen years, are organising two sessions to guide Goans who wish to be part of this voluntary initiative.

A one-hour session on Saturday, October 17, from 4 to 5 pm will focus on photographs for the Goa-related Wikipedia pages.

Entitled ‘Wikimedia Commons: What, Why and How?’ the session aims to be a “small, practical demonstration” in putting together pictures of Goa on Wikipedia -- the free Encyclopedia.

Participants will also be given tips on how to click these photos.

The session will be conducted live on Google Meet by software engineer Tanmay Pereira Naik, one of the bulwarks of the “Wikipedians of Goa User Group.”

The meeting link for those who want to join in the session is https://meet.google.com/zhi-izzf-nmi.

Further, for those who wish to contribute to Goa-related written content on Wikipedia, the group is organising a session on Sunday, October 18 from 4 to 5 pm.

Sunday’s session aims to be a practical demonstration on how to edit a Wikipedia article/create a new page, and dos and donts of editing on Wikipedia. Participants will then be un a position to edit any article on Goa, whether it be their village, hometown, or even their own school!

The Meeting link for Sunday’s session is https://meet.google.com/tzi-sdom-tpk

According to Tanmay, who will be hosting both the sessions, “Wikipedia is a great way to learn new things and a community initiative like this helps create a reliable source of information for generations to come.”

Meanwhile, Sharbelle Fernández who joined the team of editors a few weeks back, is working on the page of Nachinola.

“I am new to Wikepedia editing and often  get stuck with important aspects of it. Our supportive team intervenes and guides at every step of the way. They are ever willing to help if one makes a mistake. I’m learning so much and loving every minute of it,” Sharbelle said.
