The Congress on Wednesday demanded that TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai fulfill the promise to provide subsidized fish to Goemkars saying the fish, which is the staple diet of Goans, is now beyond the reach of the common man.

South Goa District President Joe Dias further stated that the Goa Forward is the B team of the BJP and is making some moves to garner votes for the party in the ensuing 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He also demanded to know why development is taking place only in Fatorda while other constituencies in Salcete are being neglected by the BJP-led coalition government.

Joe pooh-poohed the statement made by the TCP Minister on Monday that Congress MLAs from Salcete have boycotted the inauguration of the renovated PDA fish market, saying most of the party MLAs were attending the CLP meeting around the same time in Panaji.

Flanked by party MLAs, Reginaldo Lourenco, Wilfred D’Sa and Clafacio Dias, the Congress district chief reminded the TCP Minister his promise made to all Goans at the historic Lohia Maidan on the occasion of Goa Revolution day last year that fish along with pav (bread) and coconut will be subsidized by the government. “I only want to remind the TCP Minister that he had announced from the historic Lohia Maidan last year that fish curry rice, which is the staple diet of Goemkars, will all be subsidized to give relief to the common man,” Joe said, while adding that though a year has passed since the TCP Minister had made the statement, the ground reality has not changed for the better for the common man.

“We are aware of the ground reality. Hence the Congress party is only demanding that the government subsidize common man’s fish such as mackerels, sardines, silver fish and prawns,” he said, adding that the Congress party does not demand subsidy on fish species such as king fish or tiger prawns.

Similarly, Joe pointed out that the price of coconut

has not come down, putting the common man to great hardships.
